Ten players selected for U.S. Men’s Hockey Team

 

Remaining Members of Team USA to be Named in Late October

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today announced that 10 players have been picked for the U.S. Men’s National University Team at the 2013 Winter World University Games. The event is scheduled to take place Dec. 10-21, in Trentino, Italy.

The U.S. team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The final roster will be named in late October.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have these 10 players on our roster,” said Ashley Bevan, USA Hockey’s senior director of adult hockey, who will serve as team leader of the 2013 Men’s National University Team. “The core group of players has a lot of hockey experience and we’re expecting to have highly skilled players throughout the lineup.”

The roster is highlighted by numerous ACHA award winners, including forwards Thomas Krysil(Leominster, Mass./U.S. Naval Academy), a two-time All-American, and John Olen (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./University of Illinois), an All-Rookie Team member last season; defensemen Phil Wendecker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Davenport University), a First-Team All-American, and Jordan Young (Care Creek, Ariz./Arizona State University), an All-Rookie Team selection in 2012-13; and goaltender Wyatt Waselenchuk (Minot, N.D./Minot State University), the reigning ACHA Men’s Division I Player of the Year. Six other players — all seniors — were chosen, including forwards Ryan Bachman (Orland Park, Ill./Adrian College), Dan McAuliffe (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona State University), Brian McGinty (Bethel Park, Pa./Arizona State University) and Gehrett Sargis (Midlothian, Ill./Robert Morris University); and defenseman Chris Joseph (Levittown, N.Y./Stony Brook University).

Dan Phelps (Livonia, Mich), head coach of Adrian College’s men’s ice hockey team, and Sean Hogan (Tucson, Ariz.), head coach of the men’s ice hockey team at the University of Arizona, will serve as assistant coaches. Phelps was an assistant coach with Balboni during the 2011 Games … The United States will field a men’s ice hockey team in the Winter World University Games for the seventh straight time. Team USA finished sixth in the 2011 Winter World University Games.
