The World University Games is the American term for “Universiade”, which is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words “University” and “Olympiad”. The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, staged every two years in a different city around the world. It is second only in importance to the Olympic Games. Universiade has Summer and Winter Games similar to the Olympic Games.
The Winter Games consists of seven mandatory sports and an additional one or two optional sports/competitions based on the choice of the host city. Mandatory Sports: Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Ice Hockey, Ice Skating, Biathlon, Figure Skating, and Curling.
The Summer Games consists of twelve mandatory sports and a maximum of three optional sports/competitions based on the choice of the host city. Mandatory sports are: Athletics (Track & Field), Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Judo, Gymnastics, Fencing, Swimming, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Diving.
